Our Story

Grit and Grape

Our story begins at Continental Vineyards. A 2500-acre parcel of land quietly harboring stories of hard-working caballeros, cattle barons and grape growers whose dedication and vision shaped this place.

Originally named Rancho Tierra Rejada “Land of worked earth”, it is the determination of those who preceded us, and our care for this land that makes our wines unique. Our wines are a bold representations of the place where they were born. Crafted with minimal intervention to reflect the soil, fruit and character of this place.

The History

Visionary Herman Schwartz purchased the property in 1973 and planted 520 acres to grapevines. Schwartz was an innovative grower with a keen interest in sustaining the environment and promoting Paso Robles as a high-quality wine grape growing region. He embraced sustainable farming techniques as they were first coming on to the scene in the early 1980s.

With the same eye toward the future, he eventually realized the need to upgrade the vineyard, replanting between 1995 and 1998, carefully choosing plant material appropriate to each site in the vineyard. The ranch was sold to the current owners in 2006, who remain committed to sustaining the environment by implementing technologically advanced farming methods.

The Vineyard is a model for growing first-quality Paso Robles wine grapes in an eco-friendly manner. The Vineyard, previously known as “Continental Vineyards” at Rancho Tierra Rejada was established in 1973 as one of the first large-scale producers in the area. It is currently planted to 712.97 acres of premium wine grapes including varietals common for the region, as well as many favorites more commonly grown in other area's around the globe.

Sustainability

We all aspire to do more, to reduce our impact on this earth. At Broken Earth Winery our endeavor is to support the long-term

ecological balance in the production of wines. Starting in the vineyard by using sustainable vineyard practices (integrated pest

management, water conservation and protection of natural resources) and via an energy efficient, solar-powered wine production

facility.
